If Ms Rhodes is interested in politics and local government we'd be happy to offer her a basic introduction if she would find it helpful. For example, it may be helpful for her to know that the business rate is not levied by the local Council but directly by government (known as 'National Non-Domestic Rates' or NNDR), though the local council does collect it. If she would like to join the long-standing Wandsworth Conservative campaign to have the business rate returned to local authority determination we'd be delighted to have her support. The meeting on February 17 for Tooting Ward is one of the Council's regular Ward Report Back meetings, held in turn in each of the 20 Wards, at which the three Ward Councillors (two Conservative and one Labour in this case) can discuss their work and listen to local views. The Leader of the Council (and to be fair the Leader of the Opposition too) both attend as every Ward in Wandsworth is of importance to both of the main parties. Council officers are there too. Had Tooting (or indeed any Ward in Wandsworth) elected any Liberal Councillors they too would be invited to take part in such a meeting when it was their Ward's turn. But this one is a mainstream Council-led meeting and is therefore correctly chaired by a Council official, in this case the Leader - there are many other meetings in the community which Councillors attend but which are chaired by other people. | Dear Newsraid,
Thank you for the email. Please can you correct an inaccuracy in your publicity? You state that the towers are planned by Wandsworth Council. Unfortunately, this is not correct. The planning application is from the developer concerned. The Council has to legally consider any planning application. It is no more true to say that this is a Council application than it would be to say that a resident applying for a loft extension is planned by Wandsworth Council.
Thanks
Russell |
