| Dear friend,
Warmer homes, cheaper bills
The last few days have shown this winter is one of the coldest in recent years. With this in mind, on Friday (30th January) I am holding my fourth annual community ‘Warm Front’ event for local residents to receive advice on benefits, energy efficiency grants, and wider community help schemes from leading experts.
This free event will take place at Samaj Hall, Tooting High Street (behind Natwest) near Tooting Broadway – between 12.30pm and 3pm

| Let's keep a sense of perspective - Cllr Gibbons's plans would by our estimate cost something like £5.17 million every year plus another £780,000 start-up costs (assuming the whole Borough were to be treated fairly). Since we couldn't put the Council Tax up by the necessary 11% to cover this because we'd get capped - nor would we want to as people really feel the weight of Mr Brown's mountain of debt - it would mean huge cuts in other services. According to what used to be the Tidy Britain Group, the streets of Tooting and Graveney are among the top 10% in London for general cleanliness, but we do have a specific issue concerning trade waste from the stalls around the Broadway. For me one of the great things about living in Tooting is the vibrancy of the street economy, but with daytime stalls and nighttime food outlets it is a real challenge to keep that waste under control throughout the 24 hours, even given the high frequency of street sweeps throughout the day which residents are already paying for. So we are working with traders to agree relatively narrow time periods when they can put their waste out, and with the waste contractors used by most businesses to collect at certain times every day. This should allow us to maintain Tooting's unique atmosphere while reducing the inevitable untidiness that can go with it.
I respect our opposition councillors and certainly see their job as giving us a hard time where we deserve it (and maybe even, as here, when I don't believe we do). However, Labour's knee-jerk reaction to every challenge, big or exaggerated - to throw vast amounts of public money at it - is what has left the UK in such a vulnerable position to the current global downturn and which is therefore a much bigger threat to the wellbring of Tooting businesses and residents.
As a final point though, we should remember that it is not Council employees or councillors of either Party who go round dropping large amounts of litter. Sadly some residents still seem to find it acceptable to throw rubbish where they like - I am sure I am not alone in having watched people standing right in front of one of the many waste bins around the Broadway who still drop their litter on the ground. Recently we saw one irresponsible local business putting flyposters up, ironically claiming that Tooting was a dump. As with so many things, the Council cannot solve the problem on its own - we need residents and businesses to respect their surroundings too.

| Does he think that Tooting does as well for street cleaning services as Putney or Northcote Road , or is it a neglected corner of the borough? Does he think that there is more the council can do to work with local businesses in Tooting to manage waste better, or are they just bad boys that have to behave more responsibly?

| Newsraid, Of course Tooting is dirty, only people who have hardly visited it could say different. The Conservative Councillors have lavished their time & attention on other parts of the Borough, like Putney or Northcote Road. Tooting has always been given much less attention than other areas - and still does not get enough for such a busy area. I am glad that the Labour Councillors for Tooting & Graveney Wards have finally managed to get the Council to respond properly to the state of Tooting, and I'm equally glad that the local media, the papers and Newsraid, have started given this situation coverage too. The Conservatives keep trying to Blame Someone Else but their BSE approach just doesn't work. They are responsible.
